Guanacaste Medical Brigade

My school has been cooperating with Cape Cares, an organization that sends medical and dental brigades to remote areas in Honduras, for several years. My school will send two translators and a chaperone to accompany the team of doctors and dentists who come on the brigade. I have been on two of these brigades before to a place called Los Encinitos in both ninth and tenth grade. This year I signed up to go on another brigade to a place called Guanacaste. I went with my friend and my mom on Saturday January 17 and I came back home on Friday January 23. This is the story of what happened each day in Guanacaste as a translator.

On Saturday my mom and I arrived at my friend’s house and we waited there until the time we were supposed to go to the airport to meet the team. We were accidentally early to my friend’s house and ended up waiting from ten-thirty until around one. We drove to the airport and we waited for a while until our team of seven came out. There were two doctors, one psychiatrist, one nurse, one dentist, and two others who helped out with whatever. We had to pile into this little van for the two to three hour drive to San Lorenzo, the place we would be staying in was thirty minutes away from Guanacaste. We had to squeeze in three military men as well that the government sends with every brigade to ensure the team’s safety. Once we got to the place we unpacked and settled into our temporary home. We then helped sort medicines before dinner. Once we ate dinner we went to bed, getting rest for the next day.

                We woke up at six-thirty, on Sunday January 18, to be ready for seven-thirty when we would be leaving for Guanacaste. We arrived at the medical clinic we would be working in at eight and we started to unpack. Sadly my friend, my mom, and I couldn’t really help since we were just translators and we didn’t know how the team wanted their rooms to set up. Right before we started, I helped translate for the dentist as she was the only one ready to begin. And once the team was settled in, my friend and I decided that I would translate for the pediatrician and she would translate for the nurse in triage. If we wanted to switch later on we would. The morning was quite slow, not many people came. I soon didn’t have anything to do and since my friend wasn’t feeling well, I went to translate in triage. After lunch which came at around two, which I didn’t like, we started up again and I think I went back to triage but I’m not positive. We had many people arrive in the afternoon which made for a hard first day. We stayed until six and we got ready to leave. It was a tiring first day since we had a slow morning and a fast afternoon, the scorching heat did not help.

                On Monday January 19, we woke up and left at the same time. We started earlier than the day before because we didn’t have to set anything up. This day I began with the pediatrician again and my friend went in triage, my mom went with the dentist. That day I didn’t translate much because we had a medical student from Tegucigalpa there to do her required community service  and thus she was able to translate and work for the pediatrician. I became an assistant that day, bringing cards places and leading people into the room and to the pharmacy. That day we didn’t have that many people and we finished at around four. Lunch came at one-thirty which was still too late in my opinion but it wasn’t as bad as the day before. That day we got to the house and the electricity was out. It was awful. The heat was just too much, I was sitting and sweating at the house. At the clinic we had fans and the electricity did go out but it didn’t feel as bad as it was at the house. I was so looking forward to going to the house and sitting in the wonderful AC that they had there. It was terrible because no matter what I did, I was too hot. Thankfully the electricity came back on when we were eating dinner and we were able to sit in the house without dying.

                On Tuesday January 20, I was in triage. From that day on, I was only in triage and my friend was with the pediatrician. I really didn’t enjoy not translating on Monday and I wanted to be in a place where I could be translating, so I stayed in triage. That was a good day, it was slow paced but we had quite a bit of people come down. We didn’t have nearly as many people that came to Los Encinitos, but quite a few came. I really enjoyed working in triage, I got used to the types of questions that were being asked and I was able to ask the questions before the nurse had to ask me to ask the patient. I would ask general questions about why they came, what hurt most, etc. and we took blood pressure, temperature, weight, and sometime blood sugar, which I always looked away for that part. We ended at around three or four that day, it was a good day. That evening we had a presentation of the foundation that we were working with called Agrolíbano and we found out about all the wonderful things this foundation is doing in the south of Honduras. It was pretty amazing although the presentation was too long and the slides weren’t presented well. My friend translated for the presentation.

                On Wednesday January 21 I was in triage and all of a sudden cameras started coming into the clinic. Apparently there was a TV interview that was going to be going on at the clinic to promote the brigade. As I was translating several different TV stations and newspaper reporters came and went with cameras. We took a break for the interview and once they interview was done, we went back to work. After lunch we weren’t receiving any patients, just a few stragglers. And so we finished early. We left earlier than any other day, I don’t remember exactly when. It was hard because we were tired but we didn’t do a lot of work. Not as many people came which was kind of discouraging because we expected the TV special to draw in a lot of people. Once we got to the house we had plans to visit the San Lorenzo hospital. When we got to the hospital, they showed us around and I was the translator. It was very interesting to see how it was run. It wasn’t very sanitary but apparently it wasn’t as bad a Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa, according to my mom. I hated the maternity ward; the way it was set up looked so uncomfortable for the soon-to-be-mothers. That, for me, was the worst part of the hospital. After the tour we went back to the house for our dinner and to go to sleep.

                On Thursday January 22, our last day at the clinic, I was in triage. This day went super slow and we ended at around eleven because no more people came. It was very disheartening because we really wanted more people to come. The team started packing right after we ate lunch and once everything was put away we were ready to go at around two-thirty. We went back to the house and we waited around until it was time for dinner, where we would go out to eat in San Lorenzo with the ladies that we worked with at the clinic. The foundation Agrolíbano was taking us to dinner. We went to dinner and my friend and I had a little boy who talked with us while we were waiting for the food. This was a mistake because this kid was crazy. He was hilarious but he was crazy. He talked to us about several things, he swung us in the hammock where we almost crashed into a bird cage, he then (at the table) tried to bite us and he attacked us. At the end he lay on the ground and started crying as if I hurt him. I didn’t touch him but he was angry with me and ended up kicking me in the leg (not very hard) and the military man scolded him. It was very odd and when we were leaving though, the kid was okay and he ran out to say goodbye. I yelled goodbye out the window and waved, no hard feelings. My friend and I couldn’t stop laughing at the whole situation. We actually laughed way too much the whole week due to some things that happened during it.

                On Friday January 23 we woke up earlier because we were going to be visiting the foundation’s schooling and farming programs. I again was the translator as we toured the foundation’s amazing programs to help the south of Honduras. We went back to the house and we then packed up to go back to Tegucigalpa. We went to Valley of Angels so the team could shop. We got there at one and we left at around three. They dropped my mom and I at our house in Santa Lucia and then went back into the city to go to the hotel the team would be staying at. That evening at around seven we went to dinner with the team that Cape Cares funds. That was a fun time but when we went back to their hotel we had to say our goodbyes. We said our goodbyes and then my mom and I went back home, my friend went back to hers, the team would fly out on Saturday January 24.

Here is the clinic we worked at all week. 

                Overall it was a wonderful experience. I really had a great time with the team and with my mom and friend. I had fun even though it wasn’t as I expected. I was disappointed that not a lot of people came but I had an awesome time so I can’t complain. This is my last medical brigade with Cape Cares and I will remember it always.

Exodus Movie Review

This morning going into afternoon, I went to go see the movie Exodus: Gods and Kings with part of my youth group. Well needless to say, I was highly disappointed. Beware; if you don’t know the story of Moses then: spoiler alert! 

                So before I begin and say several of the things wrong with this movie, let me give you some background on the director: Ridley Scott. According to IMDb, Scott is an English director and producer. One of his more famous works was Gladiator. He was knighted for his contribution to British film. He is also an atheist. Now this does not mean he is some guy only doing this movie to get Christians upset, I cannot prove that or will I try. I’m just pointing it out.

                To begin, in the Bible Moses knew that he was Hebrew because it says that once Pharaoh’s daughter found him in the river she told Miriam, his sister, to find someone to nurse him. She brought Moses to his mother and Pharaoh’s daughter told his mother (without knowing it was his mother) to nurse him and she would pay her. It then says that the “child grew and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son.” He knew all along that he was Hebrew, while in the movie he was shocked at the idea of being considered Hebrew. Plus the way that he was told was odd and Ramses found out and was angry which was also weird. After in the Bible, it says that when Moses was grown he happened to be looking out at the slavery in Egypt and saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew. Moses looked to either side and saw no one, so he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. In the movie the only people, other than the made-up war at the beginning, that he killed was one Egyptian guard who called him slave. In the Bible, when Moses went out a second day, he saw two Hebrew men fighting and he told them to stop and they asked if he would kill them too if they didn’t. At this point Pharaoh found out about the killing and sought to kill Moses, so Moses ran into the wilderness. In the movie, Moses goes to Ramses and eventually is exiled from Egypt for stopping Ramses from chopping off his sister’s hand.

Both in the Bible and in the movie, Moses ends up in Midian at a well and finds himself among the seven daughters of the priest there. He then marries Zipporah, one of the daughters, as her father allows and he has a son named Gershom. During that time, in the Bible the people of Israel cry out for liberation and in the movie it shows how Ramses worsens the slavery. In the Bible then, Moses is tending his father-in-law’s flock near the mountain of God and the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. The bush was not burned or consumed. Moses turns away from the bush and God calls out to him and says, “Moses, Moses! Here I am.” He then proceeds to tell Moses that Israel is suffering and needs delivering and Moses is the man to do that. Moses asks him how it could be him to go and save them and God assures him that He will be with Moses all the way. Moses then gets worried, what if the Israelites ask who this God is that Moses speaks of? God answers (in all capital letters in the NKJV), “I AM WHO I AM.” God then tells Moses that the Pharaoh will surely not let them leave, so He tells Moses that He will strike Egypt with all His wonders. Moses is then worried that the people will not believe him, so God tells him to throw his rod on the ground, as he does God turns it into a serpent. God tells him to take the serpent by the tail, and viola it becomes a rod once more. Moses then has another problem; he is not an eloquent speaker. The Lord then says to Moses, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord?

Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you will say.” But Moses still did not want to speak and so the Lord told him to have his brother Aaron speak instead. In the movie, Moses walks to find his sheep and a huge mud slide happens which covers Moses so only his head is seen, however, as he is falling with the mud, he is hit in the head with a rock and then awakens to someone calling his name.  Moses awakens and sees a bush on fire and then sees a little boy. The little boy ends up being I AM. The little boy calls Moses General and tells him He needs him. The boy is portrayed as pretty spoiled and petty for the I AM. Either way, Moses agrees without second thought.

Moses, in the Bible, then goes to Jethro (his father-in-law) to ask permission to leave, and he is allowed to go. Moses took his wife and his sons to Egypt, as God told him that all the people who wanted Moses dead are dead themselves. Moses meets Aaron in the wilderness and they prepare to go to Pharaoh, as Moses explained all the God has told him to Aaron. In the movie, Moses leaves his family there and only meets Aaron once he gets to the Hebrew village. Then to skip some parts in the Bible that aren’t mentioned in the movie is the encounter with the Pharaoh, Moses, and Aaron as they discuss the idea of letting these people leave Egypt. The Pharaoh of course doesn’t let the people go, as said in the movie. God reassures Moses, not in the movie that His people will be set free. Again, in the Bible, Aaron and Moses go to Pharaoh this time though they show Aaron’s rod turning into a serpent, Pharaoh’s wise men and magicians though make their rods into serpents, in the end though Aaron’s serpent ate all the others. Pharaoh then told them that no, the people would not lead. Then the plagues start, in both the Bible and the movie. Aaron and Moses, in the Bible, were told to strike all the water in Egypt and it would turn into blood. The Pharaoh’s magicians were able to create this blood too, so the Pharaoh still said no to letting the people go. In the movie, all of a sudden, crocodiles started swimming into the river and eating people and afterwards they ate themselves until the river was filled with blood. In the Bible, it was seven days and then Aaron and Moses went to Pharaoh to ask again, and they brought the second plague of frogs but the magicians were able to make frogs come up out of the river too.

This time Pharaoh told Moses to take away the frogs and he would let the people go, so Moses asked God and He did. But Pharaoh, once he saw relief, hardened his heart and did not let the people go. In the movie there were frogs but Moses never went to ask again and Pharaoh never did any of that. The third plague was lice over the land of Egypt which wasn’t in the movie. The magicians could not make lice appear and so they said it was God, but Pharaoh was hardened and did not relent. The fourth plague was flies, which was in the movie, and they were everywhere, but in the land of His people. Moses then asked if he could go for three days, along with the people, to sacrifice to the Lord and Pharaoh said yes if he took the flies away. The flies left and Pharaoh said no, again. This last part did not occur in the movie, only that flies were everywhere. The fifth plague was Egypt’s livestock dying, while the Hebrew’s livestock lived. Pharaoh saw that the Hebrews had livestock and the Egyptians didn’t, so he again said no, they couldn’t leave. In the movie, the livestock would throw up blood and then keel over and die, they died in both sections: Egypt and Hebrew. The sixth plague was boils on every Egyptian, like in the movie, the only difference was again, and Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go. The seventh plague was hail and fire mixed with it, only where the Hebrews lived, there was no hail. The movie just showed hail, and it was everywhere. In the Bible, Pharaoh, once the plague subsided, did not let the people go. The eighth plague was locusts which will cover the earth so no one can see the earth, in the movie it showed this too. But again Pharaoh, once the plague ended he hardened his heart. The ninth plague was darkness for three days but all the people of Israel had light. This one in the movie wasn’t really shown; it was mixed with the death of the firstborn plague to come. Once the darkness was gone, Pharaoh hardened and did not let them go. During all of these plagues in the Bible, Moses and Aaron would first warn Pharaoh of the plagues and he would always tell them to leave. Then when the plague started, Pharaoh would be fed up with it and ask Moses to take it away and God would. Each time, Pharaoh’s heart was hardened even if he promised to let the people go if the plague stopped. None of this was shown in the movie.

Next to come in the Bible is when God tells Moses that he will go at midnight and kill every firstborn child in the land. But none of the children of Israel will die. And once this last plague is over, then Pharaoh will let the people go, in fact, he will insist they leave. In the movie, the little boy, who is supposedly God, tells Moses His plan but Moses says he wants no part in it. Plus with all the other plagues, in the movie, Moses never knows what is going on. Then in the Bible, it describes the Passover meal and then the painting of the doorpost with the lamb’s blood. In the movie it shows the painting of the doorposts, nothing more. So the tenth plague occurs and all the firstborn of Egypt die. Pharaoh then tells Moses and Aaron to leave. This happened in the movie. Then the Bible explains some Passover rituals and first born laws. Then it describes how the Hebrews went toward the Red Sea and the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud and by night by a pillar of fire. In the movie they went to the Red Sea but because Moses was lost and God was never depicted. In the Bible, God tells Moses to camp by the sea and then tells him that Pharaoh’s heart will be hardened again but this time He will gain honor over Pharaoh and his army. So Pharaoh went with his army to pursue the Hebrews. When Pharaoh was close by, the children of Israel were afraid, but God had a plan. Then the Angel of the Lord went out as a pillar of cloud and stood between Moses and the Pharaoh, so no one came near the other all night.

Moses then stretched his rod over the sea and God caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea into dry land, the waters were divided. The Hebrews were able to walk in the midst of the sea on dry land. The Egyptians pursued them into the sea and in the morning the Lord looked at them and he troubled the army by taking off their chariot wheels. The Egyptians then said; let us flee from the God of Israel. God told Moses, then, to let the waters go back and crush the Egyptians. It was so and the Egyptians were overthrown. The children of Israel were then saved. In the movie, the Hebrews camped for a night and then Moses threw a sword into the water and in the morning the water was receding but we don’t know to where, it’s just going away, no splitting of the Red Sea. And there was no pillar of cloud to protect the Hebrews from the Pharaoh. They walked across and then the Egyptians were coming after them, but turn when they saw a big wall of water coming back at them, but Moses was still in the middle talking with Ramses. Then Moses runs and Pharaoh is stuck and so are the other Egyptians and the Hebrews are safe. Then Moses is hit by the water and should have died but somehow didn’t and Ramses didn’t die either but all other Egyptians did.

You would think the movie would end there but it didn’t. Moses still had to go to his wife and kid and then they traveled to the land of “milk and honey,” which is what happened later in the Bible. And then Moses sees the people building the golden calf. Then Moses is seen making the Ten Commandments and he has a weird conversation with the little boy who is supposedly God. The movie ends there. It was a really long movie and it was mostly wrong. There were several little things that were wrong but the thing that was really upsetting was the portrayal of God. He was supposed to be this great I AM and instead he is seen as a bratty little kid throwing a tantrum for not getting what he wants.

Now, it is okay to get a few things wrong or misinterpreted but this was really bad. I don’t see how hard it is to make a movie based off of a Bible story. If movies can be made that are fictional and an atheist thinks that the Bible is fictional, how hard is it to make the movie as if it’s just a story? Honestly, if you want to take God out of a Biblical story, you can’t. It’s like trying to take Harry Potter out of the Harry Potter movies. Which sounds ridiculous, and it is! The Bible is all about God, what do you expect? You can’t try to take him out of the story, it’s ridiculous. Just make the movie as if it is a story, don’t try to screw it up because you don’t believe in it. If you can make movies about Thor and Loki (Norse gods), how hard is it to make a movie about my God? Goodness, I hate when a movie that is based off of a story or book is skewed or done really poorly. I did not like Divergent, The Fault in our Stars, or The Maze Runner movies. They were done terribly, the casting was the main problem but still they messed up so many things and I was upset. The Bible is also a story; the only difference is it isn’t fiction. So if you mess that up, yes I am going to be upset. I was also upset with the first Hunger Games because they really messed up the ending and I didn’t know how they’d start the second, but they did a fine job and I forgave the mistake. The Harry Potter movies as well had several things missing and a lot that was lame, but I still enjoy those movies especially the last two. I’m not just complaining because I’m a Christian, although that is the main reason. I am also complaining because they messed up the story.

I didn’t bother to see Noah because I knew that one would be bad, but this one I had hope that maybe they’ll do it well. Nope, Scott did not do it well. Please, if you’re going to make a movie from a Bible story do it well. Don’t get rid of that personal relationship that Moses had with God, don’t mess up the plagues and vital parts of the story, don’t make God a little boy that’s spoiled and bratty, and don’t make Moses seem like just a warrior of men and not a warrior for Christ.

Sorry for such a long post, but it was fitting my mood. If you see the movie, I’m sorry that you had to endure so many mistakes. Thankfully it wasn’t as awful as Noah (according to my dad). I used the NKJV for all of my Bible research; I’m not just making it up! Also, I may be missing some other mistakes but seeing that the post is already super long, I’ll leave it at what it had now.

25 Questions (Part 2)

I wanted to have a real inspirational blog post but I had nothing so instead I’ll resort to doing the other half of questions about myself. So without further ado, here are twenty-five other random questions/facts about me!

1. Which celebrity do you get mistaken for?

Some people have said I look like Scarlett Johansson, but my family has said that’s not true. I used to look like the actress for Lucy in the first Narnia movie, I swear they stole my face and put it on her body! 

2. What do you want to be when you grow up?

I wanted to be a famous singer and a mom when I grew up, I would sing as a teen and once I turned twenty I would get married and have kids. Now though, I’m still figuring it out, although I still want to be a mom I no longer wish to be a famous singer.

3. When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time?

I will probably read or listen to music.

4. What would you name the autobiography of your life?

Something along the lines of “The Journey of Katarina Fenn”

5. What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?

This is a super hard question because there are so many good songs that I would love to have. I’ll say two that I can think of off the top of my head: Free To Be Me by Francesca Battistelli and Centuries by Fall Out Boy.

6. Have you ever had something happen to you that you thought was bad but it turned out to be for the best?

Moving to Zambrano, as we had only lived in Honduras for about three months it was hard to think of moving again, plus the way we had to move and it wasn’t really our decision made it hard. It ended up turning out for the best as we met some amazing people and some other great things that would have never happened, happened because we had moved!

7. What was one of the best parties you’ve ever been to?

I don’t really go to parties in the way I think this is meant to be so I’ll just say that the best Birthday Party I’ve been to has been my Quince, when I turned fifteen and we had a really cool celebration!

8. What was the last movie, TV show or book that made you cry or tear up?

The last movie was Courageous, the last TV show was Suits (I think), and the last book was The Book Thief that made me cry or tear up.

9. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?

I can’t think of the exact hardest thing, it’s more of certain decisions I make concerning my friends which tend to be the hardest I’ve ever had to make, like choosing whether or not to go to this party that I’m supposed to go to and I want to go to but I’m not sure if I should even if I have permission.

10. What was the last experience that made you a stronger person?

Recently I had a close friend completely lie to me and she’s lied to me before and thrown me into bad situations before but this time it was different, it showed me who she really was and that I can still be her friend but not trust her. I had to forgive her which was hard since I was really hurt, but I came out knowing that I have an awesome best friend (she was also lied to that same night) and that I can forgive the people I really don’t feel like forgiving.

11. What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?

I was an angry child and so I would be really mean to my siblings and because I was so mean to them, my parents thought it was always me who was causing trouble concerning them which it wasn’t always me, just sometimes. I think just my crappy attitude got me in trouble in my family, outside my family I was the sweet little kid and then at home I was mean (not all the time, but a lot of the time).

12. When was the last time you had an amazing meal?

My mom is an amazing cook so usually anything she makes, so the last thing she made was pizza and that was amazing!

13. What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received?

I’m terrible at giving gifts outside my family, so the worst gift I’ve given has probably been to people outside my family and the best gift I’ve given was a book to my sister (me and my sister bought it for her) that was a dictionary for all J.R.R Tolkien’s books. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a “worst” gift and the best gift was probably my kindle.

14. What do you miss most about being a kid?

Well I still kind of am a kid, but I think it was how little I cared about things, I was able to play and not worry about stuff coming the next day.

15. What is your first memory of being really excited?

When I was in preschool of day-care I would only stay half the day and I’m not sure why but I always left before lunch and nap time. I really wanted to stay for nap time and again I don’t know why because I didn’t actually like napping. I just wanted to eat my lunch and lie on a cot and take my nap at the place. So the teacher said that if I was a good girl I would get a star per day and if I got a certain amount of stars I would be able to stay and take my nap. I did it! I just remember that I was able to do it and I stayed for a nap, which wasn’t all that cool but either way I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish!

16. What was the first thing you bought with your own money?

I either bought some kind of toy or candy.

17. When was the last time you were nervous?

When I sang on worship team and I realized I forgot how a part went and it was too late to practice it again.

18. What is something you learned in the last week?

That you can’t jump to conclusions about some types of things, things don’t happen the same way twice.

19. What story does your family always tell about you?

Depending on who it is but it usually has to do with me making my sisters do something that was dumb, me being lazy, or me being clumsy.



20. At what age did you become an adult?

Technically I’ll be an adult in a few months (18) but I tend to be a bit crazy yet responsible so I have no clue when I’ll be considered an “adult.”

21. Is a picture worth a thousand words? Elaborate.

Sometimes I think it is because for me pictures bring back memories of the past and so when I look at a picture I can say, “Oh, this happened in x-y-z place and blah blah blah.” I can remember all that went on around the picture. Sometimes I forget about a specific memory and a picture and help me remember the memory.

22. Where’s Waldo?

This is a weird question, but I’m going to say he’s in the book where he is supposed to be hidden…

23. The best part of waking up is?

I don’t know because I don’t really like waking up but if I was to give an answer I’d say eating breakfast.

24. How now brown cow?

Again, a weird question and I have no clue what it means because I’ve never heard it before. So… good?!

25. Whasssssuuuupppppp?

Nothin muuuuuuch!
